This moment

O, Lord, you know me so well
You know exactly when I fall asleep
and the moment I wake in the morning
Because you created me
you know my traits and personality
my quirks and longings
even my unspoken thoughts
You love me so much, my God
You created me for a purpose
even though I can’t always see it
You surround and protect me
and you walk with me
But sometimes I forget your love
I try to run away from your presence
But where could I go?
If I go to Finisterre – you are there
If I go to the moon or Mars
or down into the Mariana Trench
even if I hide in the Mammoth Caves
– you are there with me Lord
I can’t escape your living, loving presence
not even when I am in hellish despair
Will you guide me to trust you more deeply?
Not to hold onto regrets and what ifs
nor to fear the unknown future
but to live for today – this moment
this life-sustaining breath

Cape Finisterre peninsula on the west coast of Galicia, Spain. It was believed to be the end of the known world in Roman times. (Latin finis terrae, meaning “end of the earth”)

Psalm 139: 7-10 (NIV) Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
